HISTORY OF ALMTC
Arusha Lutheran Medical Training Centre is a health college located 5km from Arusha city in Ekenywa village Mianzini road.
Arusha Lutheran Medical Training Centre was officially opened on December 2012. The aim was to offer Advanced Diploma to Clinical Officers so that they upgrade to Assistant Medical Officers. The department of nursing which later came to be the School of Nursing was introduced in 2014 and community health program was added on October 2016. However, community health program is no longer offered due to change of government policies. Also, Advanced Diploma to Clinical Officers program ended in 2016 following change from ministry of health guidelines. Before phasing out AMO program produced 21 personnel.
...The School of Nursing was established on 03 August 2014. This was the only nursing training college in Arusha region. The college was established as an articulation of diocese in its priority to support education for children from marginalized communities mainly girls from Maasai and neighboring pastoral communities. Nevertheless, school of nursing also enrolls and accepts students from all parts of Tanzania and beyond.
Also, all health institutes owned by ELCT, North Central Diocese were facing a significant turnover of nurses and midwives as many used employment tenures to these institutes as temporary source of income and an arena for experiential knowledge before being permanently employed to government hospitals. Therefore, curbing such aversive scenarios the diocese had to train own personnel.
To enhance the artifact of supporting needy students who cannot suffice to pay tuition fees and associated costs, the diocese established collaborative relationship with Operation Bootstrap Africa (OBA). OBA is an organization which alleviate poverty through education. They support Maasai girls and other proved needy students who come from rural poor families to get education from secondary school to colleges.
Currently, the college has added programme of Social Work with technician certificate and ordinary diploma levels.
Program-wise, students are offered free transport to their clinical practice and community field areas where they learn and get opportunity of conducting research. Community and rural health centers expose students into contextual realities that needs clinical and medical attention hence transforming theoretical knowledge to the useful experiential one and skills.
